About

The Centre works across all sectors of education, nationally and internationally, developing help, advice and resources for teachers and learners.

Overview

CIMT has over 35 years of experience in mathematics education. During this time the centre has developed resources for early years thorough to A-Level as well as providing CPD courses at masters level and subject knowledge for teachers. The resources have been produced to enable implementation of research findings from international projects the centre has coordinated. Much of the material CIMT has produced (and continues to produce) pulls from good practice in countries who are high performing in mathematics, such as Singapore, Japan, Hungary and Finland.

In the past, CIMT has worked with schools, colleges, exam boards, universities, local authorities and private organisations on a number of projects. The centre is always keen to work on new developments with the wider mathematics community and would welcome enquiries regarding potential collaboration. The centre contact details and information about its personnel can be found below.

CIMT Team

Professor David Burghes - CIMT Director: David set-up CIMT in 1984 at the University of Exeter when appointed to a Professorship in Education. He is responsible for the overall direction of the centre and projects to be taken on and developed in consultation with colleagues. At Exeter he undertook international comparative longitudinal research projects, Secondary and Primary, leading to the development of teaching strategies and associated resources to enhance mathematical progress. This has continued at the University of Plymouth with a focus on Core Maths (for post 16 learners) and Primary Mathematics.

Testimonials

I would like to thank you for the excellent resources on your CIMT Website. I have now been using your materials with my son for 6 months, and I am very impressed with how well-structured, varied and thorough the resources are. Your materials so far have been far superior to anything I came across including market leaders.

– A very grateful parent of a Year 2 child

I was a secondary and A-Level Mathematics teacher prior to moving to HE and I often used the exercises from the amazing CIMT books with my students. Your resources are wonderful and incredibly valuable, so thank you for making this project freely available. My current role is to support students who have gaps and are falling behind in Mathematics, and since we aim to give them the equivalent of GCSE/A-Level studies the resources on the CIMT website are ideal, and I would love to continue using them.

– HE lecturer providing pre-degree support to international students

My three children have all been through the MEP primary and KS3 programmes, since we took the decision to take them out of school eight years ago. The elder two both took Edexcel IGCSEs one year after completing the MEP Year 9, getting an A* and a 9 respectively. MEP KS3 had completely prepared them for the IGCSE Foundation level, so they were able to spend a year focussing on the Higher material, and score extremely highly on that. I really appreciate the rigour and consistency of approach of MEP, from early primary right through secondary. It really encourages mathematical thinking.
